Havanese are genuinely one of the more trainable companion breeds — they're people-focused, food-motivated, and pick up new behaviours quickly. Their main vulnerability is their devotion to their owners: Havanese who aren't taught to be alone from puppyhood can become extremely anxious when left, which impacts their quality of life and their owner's. Most Havanese come home at 8–12 weeks and start bonding intensely within days.

Havanese are natural people-pleasers, which makes them genuinely enjoyable to train. They pick up cues quickly, are motivated by food and praise, and have the focus to work through short training sessions productively. Standard positive reinforcement works well — harsh corrections aren't necessary and will damage the relationship.
The primary training priority for every Havanese owner should be building alone-time tolerance. This breed's deep attachment to their owners, combined with a very common pattern of constant presence in early puppyhood, creates the conditions for severe separation anxiety. Teaching a Havanese to be comfortable in their crate or alone in a room for increasing durations should start in week one, not when the problem has already developed.
Havanese are also slower to house-train than owners expect. Their small size means more frequent outdoor trips (every 2 hours for puppies), and the schedule needs to stay consistent well into the second year before full reliability is typical.
