🐾 Pomeranian Training Guide

Pomeranian training: a coach who knows your Pomeranian by name

Pomeranians are descended from large working spitz dogs and retain a surprising amount of that drive in a tiny body. They're confident, vocal, and highly intelligent — a combination that makes them genuinely fun to train but also prone to developing bossy habits if their small size leads owners to apply different rules than they would to a larger dog. Most Poms come home at 10–12 weeks and start asserting themselves almost immediately.

About the breed

Pomeranians are alert, vocal dogs who believe they have a meaningful say in household decisions. The characteristic bark is not random noise — it's a Pom communicating assertively about movement, strangers, sounds, and anything that hasn't been approved by them. Managing this requires teaching a reliable "quiet" command and, crucially, not rewarding barking with attention or action.

House-training is slower for Pomeranians than owners expect, partly because small dogs have small bladders and partly because their confidence means they're less concerned about displeasing you. Crate training and a strict schedule — not relying on the dog to signal — is the reliable method. Expect 4–6 months before solid reliability.

Pomeranians benefit from the same training structure as larger breeds. The small size tempts owners to overlook behaviours (being carried instead of walking, sleeping in the owner's face, demanding food at the table) that become ingrained habits. Treating them as "just a small dog" is how small dog syndrome develops.
