Cavalier King Charles Spaniels look like lap dogs but carry a real spaniel prey drive underneath — that squirrel will always be more interesting than you without a solid recall. They bond intensely with their owners, which makes training warm and responsive, but that same attachment means separation anxiety is common if alone-time training is skipped. Most Cavaliers come home at 8–12 weeks, and they're a breed that genuinely enjoys learning when sessions stay short and positive.

Cavaliers are among the most biddable small breeds — they genuinely want to please and respond to the slightest positive cue from their handler. Training with praise, play, and food is highly effective. The flip side of that sensitivity is that they're more affected by stress and frustration than less emotionally attuned breeds. Short, upbeat sessions with clear success are the formula.
Separation anxiety is the most clinically significant challenge for Cavaliers. The same bond that makes them wonderful companions means leaving them alone for extended periods can trigger genuine distress — destructive behaviour, excessive barking, house-soiling that doesn't occur when you're home. Prevention through early, gradual alone-time training is dramatically easier than treating established anxiety. Positive, associative crate training starting from 8–10 weeks is critical.
Cavaliers are moderate-energy dogs. They adapt well to apartment living, but benefit from daily walks and mental enrichment. Without both, they can develop low-level anxiety that expresses as clinginess.
