My 5-month-old frenchie screams in her crate like she's being murdered. I've tried covering it, putting toys in, staying in the room — nothing works. She's fine
She's learned that screaming might get her out. At some point you opened the crate while she was vocalizing, and now the behavior is locked in. Stop letting her out while she's making noise — ever. That's the first rule. Start crate training from scratch. Feed all meals in the crate with the door open. Toss treats in randomly throughout the day. Let her go in and out freely for 3-4 days. Then close the door for 5 seconds while she's eating, open it before she's done. Repeat. Gradually increase duration: 10 seconds, 30 seconds, 1 minute, 5 minutes. The door opens when she's quiet, not when she's screaming. If she screams, wait for 2 seconds of silence, then open. Most frenchies settle in 10-14 days if you're consistent. If you open the door while she's screaming even once, you reset the timeline. Also: tire her out before crate time. A bored, wired frenchie will scream because she has nothing else to do. A tired one will sleep.
