Rottweilers are confident, loyal, and calm by nature — when properly raised. The breed's reputation for aggression is almost entirely a product of poor training and inadequate socialisation. A Rottweiler who has been trained consistently, socialised broadly, and given clear leadership is one of the most reliable large breeds you'll find.

Rottweilers are a guardian breed. They're naturally watchful, cautious with strangers, and protective of their household. Those traits aren't problems — they're the breed. The job of training is to ensure those instincts are channelled appropriately, not suppressed or amplified.
Rotties are intelligent and food-motivated, which makes them very trainable once you have their trust. "Trust" here means consistent, fair leadership. A Rottweiler who doesn't sense clear rules will make up their own — and you won't like the rules they choose.
Socialisation during the puppy period (8–16 weeks) is not optional for this breed. A Rottweiler with positive, controlled exposure to people, dogs, and environments during this window develops into a confident adult who reads situations accurately. A Rottweiler who wasn't socialised early will default to alarm, which is expensive to fix later.
