🐾 Boxer Training Guide

Boxer training: a coach who knows your Boxer by name

Boxers are perpetual teenagers — they don't fully settle until age 3 or 4, and their enthusiasm for jumping on people is legendary and physical. They're intelligent and loyal, but they need consistency more than most breeds because they test boundaries with genuine enthusiasm. Boxers typically come home at 8 weeks, and starting jumping and leash manners immediately isn't optional — a 70-pound Boxer who jumps is a liability.

About the breed

Boxers are genuinely affectionate and attentive to their owners, which makes them responsive to positive training when properly motivated. They like to please, they like to play, and they learn quickly when training is framed as an extension of interaction rather than a separate obedience exercise. The challenge is that all of that enthusiasm needs channelling.

Mouthiness is common in young Boxers and directly links to their history as catch-dogs (holding game while the hunter arrives). They use their mouths to interact with the world and will mouth hands and clothing during play. Redirect to appropriate toys, implement brief timeouts for hard biting, and be consistent — this usually resolves by 18–24 months with proper management.

Boxers are also sensitive despite their size. They don't respond well to harsh corrections and can shut down if training is punitive. Positive reinforcement, playful sessions, and ending on success keeps Boxers engaged and progressing.
