Great Danes are gentle giants — calm, affectionate, and surprisingly easy to train when started early. The problem is timing: a 10-pound puppy who jumps or pulls is manageable. That same dog at 120 pounds is a safety issue. Everything a Great Dane learns (or doesn't) in the first six months has outsized consequences because of where they end up in size. Most Danes come home at 8–12 weeks and grow at a rate that shocks first-time owners.

Great Danes are one of the most size-dependent breeds to train — the window to build leash manners, jumping inhibition, and recall before the dog reaches full weight is narrow and non-negotiable. A 6-month-old Dane is already 60–80 pounds. At 18 months, they may be 130. Training must happen early because correction becomes physically impractical later.
Danes are gentle and handler-focused. They don't require the mental stimulation of a Border Collie or the exercise load of a Labrador, but they do need consistent rules from the start. Their size makes them natural furniture-climbers and accidental bowl-emptiers — management plus early training solves this.
Socialization during puppyhood is particularly important for a breed this large. A poorly socialized Dane who reacts fearfully or aggressively around strangers and dogs is a real safety concern. Controlled, positive exposure in the first 16 weeks pays dividends for the next decade.
