GSPs have a high prey drive and an off-switch that takes years to develop. Young GSPs (under 2 years) are essentially working dogs who haven't learned to be house dogs yet. This breed benefits enormously from purpose: structured training, hunting work, agility, or nosework that gives the brain and body something concrete to do every day.
The breed is highly trainable — GSPs pick up commands quickly when well-exercised. The caveat is that a GSP who hasn't been adequately tired will struggle to concentrate during training. Physical exercise before sessions improves focus dramatically. Burn the energy first, then train.
Recall is critical for GSPs because their prey drive can take them out of visual range quickly when off-leash. A bombproof recall takes time, consistent high-value reinforcement, and a long-line training phase before true off-leash freedom is appropriate.
