What the marker word is — and what it isn't

The marker word is not "good dog" said at the end of a session. It's not praise. It's a neutral sound — one syllable, always the same — that through repetition becomes a conditioned reinforcer: a sound that produces a physical reward expectation in your dog's nervous system.

It functions identically to a clicker. The advantage over a clicker: you always have your voice. The disadvantage: humans are inconsistent with tone, timing, and delivery — a clicker produces the same sound every time. For the marker word to work, it must be delivered in the same neutral tone regardless of your emotional state. "Yes" said in an excited voice and "yes" said in a flat voice are different stimuli to your dog.

Choose your word: "yes," "yep," "nice," or the traditional "yes" — one syllable works best. Don't use a word you say frequently in conversation ("yes" in Spanish-speaking households should be "yep" not "sí"). Don't use a word you're likely to say while praising ("good boy" is too long and too emotionally inflected to be a precise marker).

How to load the marker word

1. Prepare 20 small, high-value treats. Real food — boiled chicken, string cheese, freeze-dried liver. Not kibble for this initial loading phase.
2. Say your marker word once, in a calm, neutral tone. Immediately deliver one treat. No hand signal. No behavior required. Just: word → treat, word → treat, word → treat.
3. Repeat 20 times with 2–3 second gaps. Your dog doesn't need to do anything. You're building a Pavlovian reflex, not training a behavior.
4. Test the response after 3–5 loading sessions. Say the marker word when your dog isn't expecting it and isn't looking at you. A conditioned marker causes an immediate orienting response — the dog snaps their attention to you, expecting food. That's the reflex you're building.
5. Once the reflex is there, start using it to mark behavior. The mark must happen at the exact moment the behavior occurs — not after, not during your reach for the treat. Mark first, then reach.

Mastery criteria — when the marker word is truly loaded

• Your dog immediately orients to you when the marker word is said — from any position, doing anything else
• You can mark a specific paw touching the floor and your dog understands exactly what earned the treat
• Your timing is consistent: you can say the word at the exact moment a behavior happens, not a half-second after
• You never say the marker word without delivering a treat within 3 seconds

Common mistakes

• Using it as praise. "Yes, good boy, yes, YES!" erases the precision. One mark, one treat. Stop talking after the mark.
• Marking without treating. Every mark must predict a treat, always. If you mark and then can't deliver, the reflex weakens. Don't mark unless you have treats ready.
• Late timing. Marking a full second after the behavior teaches your dog that the treat is for standing around looking at you, not for the behavior. Practice your timing on inanimate objects before using it with your dog.
• Inconsistent sound. "YES" in an excited voice vs "yes" in a tired voice are different cues. Work on delivering the same tone every time.
