🐩 Standard Poodle

People See the Haircut.
They Miss the Athlete Underneath.

Standard Poodles are water retrievers bred for endurance, intelligence, and independent problem-solving. When you treat them like decorations, they respond by eating your couch.

What Standard Poodle owners actually deal with.

Consistently top 3 in intelligence — and treated like a lap dog.

Poodles learn new behaviors in 1–5 repetitions. The bad news: they learn bad habits just as fast. One successful counter surf teaches them that counters contain rewards. The speed of learning means the first week matters more for a Poodle than almost any other breed.

Standard Poodles don't just learn commands — they learn your patterns. They know the difference between your "getting ready for work" routine and your "going to the park" routine. This emotional attunement makes them extraordinary companions and terrible candidates for punishment-based training.

Standard Poodles are athletes. They were bred to retrieve waterfowl all day. A walk around the block is maintenance, not exercise. Under-exercised Poodles get creative, and creative Poodles are expensive Poodles.

Built from one dog's first year.

I'm Jason. I built FetchCoach because when I got Baelor — my Golden Bernese, now 3 months old — every training app I tried had no memory of where we left off and no concept of breed-specific challenges.

Your dog mastered "sit" on day one and the app still wants to review it in week three. Meanwhile, the separation anxiety is getting worse, the counter surfing is escalating, and no one's helping with the stuff that actually matters. FetchCoach tracks real progress, identifies real problems, and builds a plan that evolves as fast as your dog learns.

Week by week — no generic curriculum.

Week 1: Security & Boredom Prevention

  • Alone-time conditioning — Step out of the room for 10 seconds. Return calmly. No hello fanfare. Build to 2 minutes. → Separation Anxiety Guide
  • Puzzle feeding — Stop feeding from a bowl. Every meal comes from a Kong, snuffle mat, or food puzzle. 15 minutes of cognitive work per meal.
  • Place command with duration — Poodles need a "job" even when the job is doing nothing. → Learn Place
  • Positive crate introduction — Treats tossed in casually throughout the day. Meals fed inside. No closing the door under protest. → Crate Training Guide

Week 2: Emotional Regulation & Engagement

  • Recall with variable rewards — Poodles figure out patterns fast. Vary: treats, toys, play, praise. Keep them guessing. → Recall Training
  • Leave-it ladder — Low value (kibble) → medium (cheese) → high value (real meat) → movement (toy rolling). → Learn Leave-It
  • Calm greeting protocol — Four-on-the-floor: no attention until calm. → Jumping Solutions
  • Settle after excitement — Play a 2-minute tug game, then cue settle. Train the transition from high to low arousal.

Week 3: Proofing & Real-World Confidence

  • Extended separation — Build crate time to 30+ minutes while you're in another room. Then leave the house for 5 minutes. Boring departure, boring return. → Crate Training Guide
  • Loose-leash in busy areas — Standard Poodles attract attention. People want to pet them. Distraction training in a beautiful package. → Loose-Leash Walking
  • Recall with social distraction — Long line at a park with people and dogs. Build the history that choosing you over social opportunity is always worth it.
  • Sit-stay in public — Outdoor seating, pet store, sidewalk. Duration sit with distractions. → Learn Stay
